Hi, welcome to your English meet up podcast, the show where you will find interesting topics from science, a positive mindset, to trending news and also improving your English. I am Karla and we are covering the mindset we need to be successful in learning a language. On the website, you can find the vocabulary, and transcript to every episode we are posting. You will first find me talking in English and then doing a small summary in Spanish of main ideas presented so you can evaluate yourself whether you have understood the main points of the information given.
So, let's get started.
Have you ever seen yourself asking these questions?
· Why am I not making more progress?
· Why does he/she have an easier time learning than me?
· How can I stop making so many mistakes?
· Will, I will ever be able to learn this language?
Those are examples of negative mindset thoughts that create doubts in our mind and interrupt our learning progress.
Before we get into the learning techniques its important to first focus on our mindset. If we have a negative mindset it will keep up us in fear and it won’t allow us to grow because beliefs guide our thoughts and end up being our actions. This translates to being afraid of mistakes and staying in your comfort zone.
In order to practice a language, we will face uncomfortable situations that require being out of your comfort zone. Its an opportunity to learn more about ourselves from our learning style to our ability of patience, a skill needed in every area of life.
For example, if you say you are not good at writing your mind subconsciously be in search of mistakes of why you are not good at it. So, we had picked 5 ways to have a positive mindset while learning a language.
1) Your language goals
You should ask yourself
· Why do I want to learn this language?
The reasons vary for everyone, from wanting to travel to England, to understand your favorite TV show or music
It's important to put them on a piece of paper where you can see it to always remember the reason you are working hard for it.
The second point we are talking about is changing your inner dialogue
2) Change Your Inner Dialogue
If you saying statements like “I can’t ~” or “I’m so bad at ~” it is affecting what you believe about yourself and by saying it many times you are making it a truth.
Make sure you eliminate the Idea of failure is something unacceptable and instead see what those mistakes are trying to teach you.
Instead of using hurtful inner dialogue, you add inspirational quotes in your mirror, computer, or phone background this way you are exposed to positive statements.
3) Let go of worries and fear
Use your imagination to picture the worst scenario that can happen, and accepted as if it has already happened and see how you can improve it.
4) Push outside your comfort zone
In order for the language to not intimidate us, we need to practice many times until it becomes familiar. This is done by joining conversation clubs, traveling to an English speaking country and, expanding your learning tools.
Eliminate 5 words that you use very often and look up synonyms to expand your vocabulary
5) Language and personal interest
If you enjoy beauty tutorials or cooking, you can combine both interests by learning a new skill that you already enjoy and a new language.
6) Self-awareness on your learning progress
It's important to do a check-up on how your progress is going this way you can notice what’s not working and ways to fix them.
Every week you can do the following questions:
“What went well? What didn’t go well? Are my methods effective? are my specific goals of the week met?
For some people listening to podcasts while driving can help them but for some people, they might need to listen to the podcast and use a transcript to follow along.
During the check-ups, its important to also praise ourselves for what we have accomplished because we acknowledge that we are improving.
Recommendations
Focus on the tasks you are planning to learn instead of how long you are going to spend studying. For example, you might learn how to buy clothes in a shop instead or studying for 30 minutes.
I leave you with an example of an exercise you can do right now that will help you set your goals.
Exercise
Ultimate goal: To be able to speak English fluently to move to England Specific step: Learn the vocabulary and phrases necessary when arriving at the airport
Short-term goals: By the end of this week, I will have learned the vocabulary words for asking directions, and answering personal information. By the end of the month, I will have learned the phrases and basic vocabulary needed to talk to the immigration officer.
It's very important for you to believe in your goals and visualize achieving them. Remember that your mindset creates your reality.
On our website post the exercise. I am very excited to see why you want to learn English and learn more about you.
Thank you for listening to the show, and now that we have a positive mindset and goals clear we can begin our journey to learn English.
